External Relations Manager

EXTERNAL RELATIONS MANAGER, Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU), to join a team working on the design and planning of large-scale, complex metropolitan environments. Will oversee the LCAU’s external partners and serve as a central coordinator and information source on all outreach and research activities between partners and MIT faculty; support the growth of LCAU’s external alliances, identifying, cultivating, and securing new external partnerships and maintaining relations; develop an awareness of LCAU research initiatives, help communicate collaborative research projects to faculty and outside funders, and maintain relationships with LCAU-affiliated faculty to accurately represent research interests to potential partners; collaborate with the center’s director, executive director, and affiliated faculty to develop grant submissions (internal and external) and philanthropic proposals, working closely with the assistant dean for resource development to coordinate Institute development efforts and resources; and work as a meaningful thought partner, engaged collaborator, and proactive problem solver.  

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree; at least two years’ experience with and knowledge of the principles, concepts, and best practices for industry relations and major donor-funded initiatives; evidence of fundraising success cultivating and soliciting funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations; experience developing and stewarding sponsored research proposals; ability to function as an effective team member; excellent analytical and written and oral presentation skills and ability to clearly articulate complex information and funding priorities; and comfort working in a highly diverse and international environment while building productive working relationships with a wide range of people.  PREFERRED: proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and a master’s or terminal degree in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or closely related field.

Research Associate

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU), to join a team working on the design and planning of large-scale, complex metropolitan environments. Will divide time with MIT’s Civic Data Design Lab and contribute to several ongoing research efforts. LCAU duties will include managing new initiatives being developed at the intersection of data science, technology, and city design; help implement the LCAU’s research efforts through the Digital Urbanism InitiativE; and further develop and expand research and knowledge transfer activities as part of this initiative.  Will also lead project framing and conduct specific research aimed at developing tools that will aid designers in their use of data; coordinate and prepare grant proposals; develop reports; build a publication record through both traditional and non-traditional outlets; oversee and provide guidance to TAs, RAs, and students working on this initiative; help develop connections across MIT and with companies, non-governmental organizations, and governments; manage the coordination of projects to ensure deadlines are met; and work with a broad network of collaborators. Other responsibilities may include coordinating meetings with sponsors, preparing presentations for future funding sponsors in conjunction with LCAU leadership, and assisting in writing external funding proposals. 

 

REQUIRED:  master’s or terminal degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning, geography, or related field; at least two years’ direct experience; experience processing and synthesizing large data sets; excellent research and written and verbal communication skills; project management experience; and experience working with a diversity of disciplines.  PREFERRED:  experience with web development and data visualization, web mapping tools, and data science; and an interest in design and graphic design.
